It's official -- October WAS cold

Last month was the coldest October for 64 years throughout much of New Zealand, including Wanganui. Figures released from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research [NIWA] show that temperatures in the lower North Island were on average 2 degrees colder than normal.

New water taxi pier for The Rees Hotel

The Rees Hotel in Queenstown has introduced a water taxi service from its new Pier, providing guests with a convenient, fast and scenic transfer across the waters of Lake Wakatipu. While some guests choose to drive the short distance to the centre of Queenstown, this new option by water taxi service will enable them to soak up the local scenery during the ten-minute trip.

Hobbiton now a closed set

The Waikato Times reports that a convoy of vehicles has arrived at Matamata’s Hobbiton set ahead of location shooting of The Hobbit movies. A security guard has reportedly been posted at the front gate and the Hobbiton set is closed to visitors, with a few traffic signs and road cones placed to deal with an expected increase in traffic on the narrow country service
road.

Tutukaka among top-rated coastlines

The Tutukaka Coast is one of the top three coastlines in the world, according to the prestigious National Geographic Traveler. The coastline was named equal second best with the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales and pipped for the top spot by the remote, austere Avalon coast on Canada's Newfoundland. Local tourism operators say money could not buy the kudos given Tutukaka Coast by the magazine's finding.

Gas leak: Farmers face mass milk dump

Farmers in Rotorua, Taupo and Whakatane face emergency milk disposal after a major disruption to the gas pipeline supply network in the North Island yesterday. The line, which links the Maui gas field to the upper North Island, closed yesterday morning after gas began escaping in north Taranaki. The Gas Industry Company said there had been a notice of "immediate curtailment" of gas use by all consumers other than residential customers in the areas north of King Country and in the Bay of Plenty.
